The Honda Classic should be an excellent tournament on which to wager this week. Some of the biggest names in golf are teeing off on Thursday in the Honda Classic.
Besides betting on a golfer to win the tournament straight-up, golf bettors can bet tournament matchups as well as on which golfers will finish in both the Top 4 and the Top 10.
Let’s take a look at some of the better wagers in the Top 4 and Top 10 categories in this week’s Honda Classic. We’ll start with the Top 10 category.
Golf Betting Trends: Honda Classic Top 10 and Top 4
To Finish in the Top 10
Best Bet: Robert Allenby +120
Anything above even money on Allenby to finish in the Top 10 is an overlay. Allenby has recorded 3 Top 5 finishes at PGA National Golf Course, the site of the Honda Classic this week, and is coming off of an 8th place finish in the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Not only that, but he already has 3 Top 10 finishes in the 5 tournaments in which he’s played in so far in 2010.
Best +900 or Below Bet: Scott Piercy +600
Piercy finished tied for 5th in the 2009 Honda Classic and is coming off of an 8th place finish in the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Sure, Piercy has missed the cut in 4 of the 6 events he’s played in so far in 2010, but his history at PGA National has to be taken into account and 6 to 1 odds on a golfer to finish in the Top 10 is nice. I’ll take a swing on Scott to put together two good tournaments in a row.
Best +1000 or Higher Bet: D.A. Points
The odds on D.A. Points to finish in the Top 10, +1000, are high enough for me to consider wagering on him to finish in the Top 10 in the Honda Classic. D.A. Points finished tied for 9th in last year’s Honda Classic. He also has a Top 10 finish in 2010. Points finished 9th in the Farmers Insurance Open. He hasn’t been doing too well since then finishing 52nd in the Northern Trust Open and missing the cut in the Waste Management Phoenix Open but he could bounce back at PGA National.
To Finish in the Top 4
Best Bet: Ernie Els +400
Allenby is going off at +300 in this category. He’s a definite top wager as well, but Els has better odds. Ernie won the Honda Classic in 2008 and hasn’t finished worse than 17th in 4 tournaments on the PGA Tour so far in 2010. He’s going to play very well this week and deserves to be considered for a wager to finish in the Top 4 in the tournament at better than expected odds.
Best +2000 or Below Bet: Charlie Wi +1800
I’m going for the money with Wi in this category. Wi finished tied for 9th in last year’s Honda Classic. That could put him into contention in this year’s Honda Classic because he knows the PGA National Golf Course. He’s been playing terribly so far in 2010 with no better than a 20th place finish and 2 missed cuts in 5 tournaments. Wi will need to step it up this week, but at the odds he might be worth a bet to do so.
Best +2000 or Higher Bet: Will MacKenzie +3500
MacKenzie finished tied for 5th in the 2009 Honda Classic. Could he possibly do one spot better in 2010 for a 4th place finish? At 35 to 1 odds, I might be willing to find out. MacKenzie has had a horrible, ridiculously bad 2010 so far. He missed the cut in the Farmers Insurance Open and then missed the cut in the Northern Trust Open. In the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, he finished tied for 35th. Maybe, he takes a huge, incredible, leap forward in the Honda Classic and gets into the Top 4. Hey, the odds on Willy aren’t 35 to 1 for nothing!
