Tuscan Evening wins Santa Ana on Santa Anita turf (AP)

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP)—Tuscan Evening led all the way and beat Cat by the Tale
by 1 lengths to win the $150,000 Santa Ana Handicap on Sunday at Santa Anita.

Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, who won all three of Santa Anita’s weekend
stakes, Tuscan Evening went straight to the lead in the field of eight fillies
and mares. Cat by the Tale gave chase in second for the entire race, but
couldn’t catch the Irish-bred 5-year-old favorite, who covered 1 1-8 miles on
turf in 1:48.03.

“This mare can do anything she wants, especially at this distance. I knew
we were the speed and I was very confident in her,” Bejarano said. “She
stumbled a little bit at the top of the stretch and she lost her momentum for a
jump or two, but she was full of run and she got going again.”

Tuscan Evening carried 123 pounds, six more than Cat by the Tale, and paid
$4, $2.60 and $2.20. Cat by the Tale paid $3.40 and $2.40. General Consensus
paid $3.20 to show.

Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer for owner William Deburgh, Tuscan Evening
earned $90,000 to increase her career total to $809,408.

She has won nine of her last 13 starts after going winless in her first 11
races.

Hollendorfer said he is pointing the mare to the Churchill Distaff Turf Mile
at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby day.
